COEXISTENCE AND MULTI-USE
The competition for marine space is intensifying. Energy, seafood, transport, nature conservation, and other interests all need room. As activity increases, so does the need for better coordination and solutions that can reduce conflict.
For the Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic, this thematic area is about finding the right balance: how can we use marine areas in ways that create value and support settlement, while at the same time protecting natural values and building trust between stakeholders?
Through projects, analyses, and meeting arenas, we explore:
- how multi-use of marine areas can be planned and organized
- how spatial conflicts can be managed and prevented
- how international agreements, such as the Global Biodiversity Framework, affect Norwegian marine spatial use
- how business, public authorities, local communities, and nature can all be part of development
