Norwegian and Faroese fisheries ministers in dialogue on sustainable feed at UiT

Norway’s Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy, Marianne Sivertsen Næss, and the Faroe Islands’ Minister of Fisheries, Dennis Holm, visited UiT The Arctic University of Norway on Tuesday 28 January 2025. UiT hosted the visit, which included a roundtable discussion on sustainable feed in the aquaculture industry.

The roundtable was planned and organised by the Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic, bringing together representatives from research, public administration and industry to discuss how new solutions can contribute to more sustainable aquaculture production. The discussion was moderated by Sigri Stokke Nilsen.

The focus of the conversation was how microalgae and carbon capture and utilisation (CCU) can contribute to more sustainable feed ingredients, and which technological, economic and political conditions need to be in place for success. The roundtable also addressed how collaboration between academia and industry can strengthen the green transition and value creation in northern regions.

Participants included:

  • Marianne Sivertsen Næss, Minister of Fisheries and Ocean Policy
  • Dennis Holm, Minister of Fisheries of the Faroe Islands
  • Sigri Stokke Nilsen, Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic
  • Espen Holst-Hansen, Professor, UiT The Arctic University of Norway
  • Geir-Henning Wintervoll, Director, Finnfjord
  • Martin Skaug, Director of Communications, Norwegian Seafood Council
  • Edmund Broback, Chair of the Board, Brødrene Karlsen
  • Sten Siikavoupio, Senior Researcher, Nofima
  • Jan-Gunnar Winther, Pro-Rector, UiT The Arctic University of Norway

Following the roundtable, Dean Jørgen Berge gave a presentation on The Arctic Ocean 2050, followed by a presentation of the master’s programme Ocean Leadership by Associate Professor Kåre Nolde Nilsen.

The visit concluded with a discussion between the ministers and students from fisheries and aquaculture programmes, as well as the Ocean Leadership programme at UiT.
