NATURE, CLIMATE AND THE GREEN TRANSITION
Climate change is accelerating in the North—at the same time as natural values, industry, and local communities are more tightly intertwined here than in most other places. As temperatures rise, so does the pressure on both the natural resource base and the decisions intended to ensure a green transition in ocean and coastal industries.
For the Centre for the Ocean and the Arctic, this thematic area is about understanding the bigger picture: how can we reduce emissions, conserve nature, and at the same time create resilient jobs and vibrant communities in the North?
Through projects, analyses, and meeting arenas, we explore:
- how climate change affects nature, preparedness, and industrial development in the Arctic
- how industry balances climate considerations and nature conservation in its plans
- which green solutions—such as electrification, the circular economy, and nature restoration—actually work
- how legislation, subsidies, and international agreements shape the green transition
- how the High North can serve as a test laboratory for new offshore solutions
- which climate adaptation measures generate societal benefits
The green transition is about how we manage natural resources, build trust, and ensure fair framework conditions for those who live and work in the North. This is crucial for future value creation—and for preserving the natural foundation on which the entire blue economy depends.
